The Plug Awards is an awards banquet and ceremony that celebrates the mentors of the creative industry. The award highlights those that elevate lesser-known talent, giving them opportunities beyond their current scope. In essence, Get On. Put On.
I was brought on to help create graphics/motion graphics for the ceremony as well as helped create graphics for social media channels.
Art Director: Kenya Brooks
Graphic Design + Motion Graphics: Me
OVERALL DESIGN
Overall design was inspired by the official award certificate (designed by Kenya Brooks). Explored different treatments on photos, positioning/size of text, etc. Kept the oversized script text, grungy feel, and golden text. We ultimatley landed on the last design. These were for the award recipients to post on their socials.
Since this is being built out for a template, wanted to make photo and name replacement streamlined (so simple photo frame and stacking the name to reduce the chances of a name being too long for the graphic).
WE ANIMATING
In the animation, continued to emphasize this gritty feel with the addition of a textured overlay and stutter-y motion. Wanted to make it feel a little bit like you’re trying to record a poster or art piece in the heart of a city. This lead to the slight, constant movement (to mimic handheld shooting) and the information going in-and-out of focus (to mimic focus racking). Overall, adding some organic-ness to a digital entity.
We eventually pivoted towards utilizing animated social posts only for the sponsor’s/award page social media, and opted for a 9×16 story post instead of 1×1 posts. Regardless, the exploration for these posts were used to inform the design and motion of the new posts seen above.
Created motion graphics for use at the actual award ceremony. These were used while people were coming into the venue (first video) and as the walk-on screen for the awardee (second video).
So from social to digital signage, these motion assets lived in a variety of places.
